Wow! I avoided reading this book for some time due to the LONG length. I'm not a fan of 500+ page novels. But I'm glad the BOTM selection for the m/m romance group forced me to tackle it. I read it in one day, from about 3pm to midnight. There was no dross and the pace keeps you reading. It's outstanding.
This is a very ambitious work for any author -- giving 12 magician contestants distinct and interesting personalities, plus the people who run the show and other assorted characters. And then there are the challenges and what they filmed inside the house. The challenges were all fun to read while you rooted for your favorite characters. And while they were all physical challenges, as opposed to magic, which may or may not be the case with a real show like this, they made for nice action scenes and tension.
The romance was really lovely--I loved both Ricardo and Professor Topaz. I was surprised at first that they got together so quickly, but that encounter was brief and there was plenty of slow-build left in store.
One of my favorite aspects of the book was Kevin and his 'strategizing' and how it always backfired. It was just perfect and gave us someone to hate.
Overall an excellent job on this book. Well done!
